I am 18 years old and have suffered from pretty bad acne since I was about thirteen. Many of the products I've tried simply haven't worked or worked for only a little while. At the same time, my 14 year old sister will use the same products I have and have clear skin within a week. I decided to do some research on my own and found out a few things about male and female acne. Believe it or not there is a difference.
-Male Skin is 25% thicker than female skin.
-Lipid composition is different
-Although testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen are present in males and females, there are different distributions of each between the sexes. Males have more testosterone while females have more progesterone and estrogen.
I found this information at campusacnetruth.org. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to what I have? Any tips or advice?

I have to disagree Michelle,
I think Pete is right on the money. I've read a lot in recent months about the connections between gender and acne. Skin thickness is different, guys have more DHT receptors which lead to increase in the production of sebum, pH levels are different, etc.
Look at it this way, in order to treat the acne of a guy, he needs a treatment strong enough to reach 25% deeper in order to treat the root cause. However, that same treatment may be a bit to rough for the thinner skin of a girl and could irritate the skin.
Don't you ever wonder why, acne treatment infomercials almost always show only girls in their before/after shots??

Interesting post. Great job researching too! There isn't much of a difference in the causes of acne in males and females and treatments may vary depending on the skin texture and sensitivity. I'm a big believer in natural remedies no matter the severity of the acne. Unfortunately you can't really predict what types of treatments will work for you (and their reactions) until you try them. Don't lose hope because what has worked for your sister hasn't worked for you. Keep trying until you find the right solution and don't try anything too harsh like prescriptions that tend to dry you up and have other terrible side effects.
