The next area that we need to talk about is prescription medications. Now if you've gone to a dermatologist, with a severe case of acne, then I am not going against his advice. However, anyone who uses prescription medications should be aware of the side effects. Some of these medications are quite scary, and can have life-long effects on your overall health.
Here are the four main types of prescription acne medications, and their side effect:
- Benzyl Peroxide (in high dosage) - Benzyl Peroxide is actually an ingredient in many acne medications. In small doses this substance will not hurt you. However, in the prescription medicines it is used in heavy dosages. With the amount contained in these acne treatments, it becomes effective in controlling acne, but only if you use it for the long term. Here's the kicker though: when used in high doses over a long period of time benzyl peroxide causes skin cancer! It can also cause blisters and cysts in these higher dosage medications.
- Minoclycine - You thought skin cancer was scary? Let's talk about Minoclycine. As an acne treatment, yes it may work, but let's talk about what can result from its use. Firstly a very common side effect is irreversible permanent staining of the teeth. So you get rid of a few blemishes, but suddenly you need $20,000 in dental veneers to fix your teeth. There are scarier side effects though. A recent study in Italy showed this chemical to be responsible for pulmonary lupus and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. - Tetracycline - Finally we have tetracycline. With these types of acne medicines you can expect many of the possible side effects of the previously listed drugs. Sweets syndrome, permanent staining of the teeth, and more. The worst side effect of this one is intracranial hypertension. Imagine getting a hole drilled in your head to release the pressure cause by your acne medicine!
