Before we talk about solutions, let's first discuss one major problem - those commercial acne medications are dangerous! They can basically be divided into two groups: store bought acne treatments (that can damage your skin), and prescription medications which have some terrifying side-effects!

Store Bought Medicines:

You may have tried store bought acne treatments. Possibly you have even had some success with these products. Some people do experience a reduction in acne for a short time with the commercial medications. These effects generally only last for the short term. More than that, often the end result, after you quit using these medications is - your acne gets worse!

That product you bought, claimed to be the solution, but now your mild case of acne has suddenly turned into a severe case that includes cystic acne! If you ask me that doesn't sound like much of a treatment at all.

The main problem with over the counter medicines is that they don't get to the core of the problem. They cleanse the skin, which does help to reduce acne temporarily. But, they include so many chemical components that they do more harm than anything else to your skin. After a while your skin becomes dry and irritated. Dead skin cells combined with this irritation suddenly cause your outbreaks to become worse.

Store bought solutions are not the answer to mild to moderate acne. They'll likely just make it worse!

Prescription Medications:

The next area that we need to talk about is prescription medications. Now if you've gone to a dermatologist, with a severe case of acne, then I am not going against his advice. However, anyone who uses prescription medications should be aware of the side effects. Some of these medications are quite scary, and can have life-long effects on your overall health.

Here are the four main types of prescription acne medications, and their side effect:

1. Benzyl Peroxide (in high dosage) - Benzyl Peroxide is an ingredient in many acne medications. In small doses this substance will not hurt you. However, in the prescription medicines it is used in heavy dosages. With the amount contained in these acne treatments, it becomes effective in controlling acne, but only if you use it for the long term. Here's the kicker though: when used in high doses over a long period of time benzyl peroxide causes skin cancer! It can also cause blisters and cysts!
2. Minoclycine - You thought skin cancer was scary? Let's talk about Minoclycine. As an acne treatment, yes it may work, but let's talk about what can result from its use. Firstly a very common side effect is irreversible permanent staining of the teeth. So you get rid of a few blemishes, but suddenly you need $20,000 in dental veneers to fix your teeth. There are scarier side effects though. A recent study in Italy showed this chemical to be responsible for pulmonary lupus and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Imagine being put on breathing machines, just because you wanted to get rid of a few zits!
3. Doxycycline - One of the newer medicines for acne treatment is Doxycycline. Again it can work to treat sever acne, but a 2002 study by John Hopins medical university showed that doxycycline induced hypoglycemia in patients without diabetes. That same year a University of Heidelberg study reported that treatment with Doxycycline can induce Sweets syndrome (a syndrome that includes painful, and much uglier sores than your acne will ever give you).
4. Tetracycline - Finally we have tetracycline. With these types of acne medicines you can expect many of the possible side effects of the previously listed drugs. Sweets syndrome, permanent staining of the teeth, and more. The worst side effect of this one is intracranial hypertension. Imagine getting a hole drilled in your head to release the pressure cause by your acne medicine!

Finally the third product we have Acnezine. This product did perform well as a general acne vulgaris treatment, but not quite as well as the other two products on the list. A reduction of blemishes was calculated to about 68% Mild to Moderate Acne - The average reduction in blemishes was 76% for mild to moderate acne sufferers of facial acne, and 75% for body acne.
